IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading from any previous version of Outlook Express 5.0, carefully follow the instructions below to preserve your existing user data, including messages, contacts, rules, and preference settings.
If you are using Macintosh OS 8.1-8.6:
Outlook Express 5 user data is stored in the Identities folder.
The Identities folder is located in one of two places on your hard
disk: the Outlook Express 5 folder, or in the Microsoft User Data
folder in your Documents folder. First, find your Identities
folder, and then read the instructions that apply to the folder
location. If you cannot locate the Identities folder, use Apple
Sherlock or Find to search for it.
>>>To maintain mail and user data when upgrading from Outlook
Express 5.0x to 5.02 (Macintosh OS 8.1-8.6 only):
* If your Identities folder is in the Outlook Express 5 folder:
1. Open the Outlook Express 5 folder and locate the Identities
folder.
2. Drag the Identities folder to the new Outlook Express 5.02
folder on your hard disk.
* If your Identities folder is in the Microsoft User Data folder
in the system Documents folder:
You do not need to move the Identities folder. Outlook Express
5.02 will access your user data as before.
NOTE: You can store your Microsoft User Data folder in any
location, including a server. However, you should place an alias
to that folder in either the system Documents folder or the
Outlook Express 5.02 folder.
If you are using Macintosh OS 9.0:
You do not need to move the Identities folder. Outlook Express
5.02 will access your user data as before.
NOTE: You can store your Microsoft User Data folder in any
location, including a server. However, you should place an alias
to that folder in either the system Documents folder or the
Outlook Express 5 folder.
2.3 Important Notes for Users Reinstalling Microsoft Outlook
IMPORTANT: If you are not currently using the Multiple Users feature in Macintosh OS 9 but you already have multiple Outlook Express Identities, carefully follow the steps below to move user data for each Identity to its corresponding Macintosh OS 9 user folder.
>>>To move the Identities folder to the correct location on your
hard disk:
1. If you have not yet done so, configure the Macintosh OS 9
Multiple Users feature for each user. (As the administrator,
or owner, of your machine, you must create an individual OS 9
user for each current Outlook Express Identity. Be sure that
the name of each user matches the name of each Identity
exactly. Refer to Macintosh OS 9 Help for setting up users
and turning on the Multiple Users feature.)
2. Log on and log off as each Mac OS 9 user in turn. The system
creates all the necessary files to configure Outlook Express 5.
3. Log on as your machine╒s owner.
4. Drag the Identities folder (in the Microsoft User Data folder
in the system Documents folder) to the desktop.
5. Open the Extras folder in the Outlook Express 5 folder.
6. Drag the Identities folder from the desktop to the Upgrade to
Macintosh OS 9 Multiple Users AppleScript in the Extras folder.
7. Open the Users folder on your hard disk.
8. Drag the appropriate Microsoft User Data folder from the
Outlook Express 5 Identities folder on your desktop to the
corresponding Macintosh OS 9 user╒s Documents folder. A
Macintosh OS 9 user╒s Documents folder is located in:
Users: <user name>, where <user name> is the name of the user.
NOTE: The machine owner╒s data is maintained in the system Documents folder; the owner does not have a user╒s Documents folder.
2.6 Rebuilding Your Desktop After Installing Outlook Express 5
